A social worker who supports social work students at Bradford College has been selected as a finalist in the Social Worker of the Year Awards 2018.
Karen Maude, who helps train students on the social work degree course at the college’s University Centre, has been nominated for the Practice Educator of the Year prize and will find out if she has won at an exclusive awards ceremony which will take place in London in November.
Karen works alongside students who are undertaking work placements in a range of settings. She also undertakes some teaching sessions at Bradford College to help prepare students for placement and attend practice panels.
The 63-year-old is one of 93 finalists across 16 categories and the winners from each category will compete against each other to be named the overall Social Worker of the Year 2018.
Karen, from Lightcliffe, described herself as “honoured and bemused” that she had been nominated for the award.
She added: “It is a privilege to be working with the next generation of social workers who demonstrate respect for human rights and commitment to work alongside people.
“I believe that social work placements and the role of the off-site practice educator is vital in developing a student’s critical curiosity and reflection on their practice, making links with the theoretical base of social work, having a safe space in supervision to explore their value base and ensure the rights of the person they are working alongside are central to their practice.”
