A Bradford mother has won a fight to take her terminally-ill daughter home from hospital.
The two-year-old suffers from Mitochondrial disease – an inherited chronic illness which causes many severe and inevitably fatal health complications.
Her mother, Shamin Akhtar, has battled with hospital staff to take her child out of the ward so that she could die in the comfort of her family home with the support of a 24-hour ventilator.
The hospital had initially refused Mrs Akhtar’s request, stating that her daughter was “in the best place” for treatment. However, hospital bosses have now confirmed that Suraiya can be taken home.
The case follows the ending of a high-court challenge by the parents of Charlie Gard, a terminally-ill baby in Great Ormond Street Hospital. Charlie’s parents had been fighting the decision of the hospital that he should remain in their care but have dropped the case since a recent scan revealed the extent of irreversible brain damage.
