A Bradford-wide campaign to help younger children develop healthy and safe relationships is being launched at a Bingley School.
Developed with the financial backing of the West Yorkshire Safer Communities Fund, the campaign has the endorsement of Mark Burns-Williamson, the Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire.
At the heart of the campaign is the ‘Friends’ bookmark. One side is red and has a list of warning signs and behaviours that suggest that someone wanting to ‘be your friend’ may have a hidden and dangerous agenda. The messages are simple and easy to understand, suggesting that a true friend wouldn’t be a bully, be selfish or unkind. The reverse side of the bookmark is green and lists the actions and behaviours a good friend would exhibit such as politeness, encouragement and a willingness to listen.
The ideas came from classroom work and discussions on friendship and were created by Year 3 and Year 5 pupils at Trinity All Saints School.
Headteacher of Trinity All Saints CE Primary School, Jane Glendinning, said “It’s humbling to think that the work of our pupils is being used to support all children across Bradford to ensure that they are only involved in healthy relationships.”
The bookmarks are being launched at an open afternoon at Trinity All Saints CE Primary School which will be attended by Mark Burns-Williamson, members of his team and Bradford Police at the school on Wednesday 22nd June and will be delivered to all primary schools around the same time. Supplementary teaching resources will accompany the bookmarks.
