Bradford's Two New Multi-Million Pound Sports Centres Move Step Closer

Bradford Council has appointed local construction consultants, Rex Procter & Partners to help develop two new multi-million pound sports centres.

Rex Procter & Partners along with their subcontractors, DarntonB3 and Furness Partnership will provide project management, design, architecture, cost and engineering consultancy services for the project.

Bradford Council has set aside £27 million to develop the new facilities.

The council's flagship leisure centre is to be constructed on Nelson Street near the Bradford Interchange.

It will feature a 25 metre, eight lane competition standard swimming pool, separate studio pool, wet and dry diving facilities, and a gym with studios for exercise classes.

The local authority will also develop a new community sports centre at Sedbergh Playing Fields, Odsal.

This will contain a 25 metre, six lane swimming pool, learner pool, an eight court sports hall, a gym and studio spaces.

Design and architectural work will begin this month with initial proposals available for public viewing in summer 2016.

The new facilities will be a higher quality than the local authority's existing centres and better suited to local people's needs with greater accessibility for older people and those with disabilities.

Due to modern construction methods and green technology, they will be much more efficient to run than Bradford's older centres, some of which date back to the 1920s.

The Bradford city centre and Odsal facilities are part of a broader programme to improve the council's sports centres.

Cllr Imran Khan Executive Member for Environment, Sport and Sustainability, said: "We are delighted to have awarded this contract to a local company with such a strong track record.

"Rex Procter & Partners put together a well thought through and compelling bid, and we are pleased that this work will support local jobs and growth.

"The company's close proximity to the project site means the contract offers significant cost and time savings.”
