A cab driver who seriously injured a pedestrian when trying to run a traffic light has been jailed for 12 months
Bradford Crown Court heard that Tariq Karamat, driving a Toyota Hiace minivan hit Sophie Rajput, at the junction of Hall Ings and Bridge Street in Bradford city centre shortly after 5pm on March 14 this year.
The court was told that collision investigators had found that the 46 year old had been travelling between 37mph and 44mph when he drove through the traffic light, which was about to turn to red.
Three factors, the court was told, contributed towards the cause of the crash; the speed of Karamat’s vehicle, the fact he had failed to brake or deviate prior to the impact, and Miss Rajput’s decision to ignore the red warning light on the crossing.
She suffered a heart attack but was revived at the scene and then taken to hospital by air ambulance with broken legs, a broken pelvis, a number of broken ribs, and lacerations to her spleen and liver.
She also suffered a second heart attack in hospital and injuries to her brain which has led to her suffering from cognitive difficulties even today and a medical report concluded she was likely to have long-term impairments.
Karamat, of Nottingham Street, Thornbury, Bradford, admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was not only sentenced to 12 months in prison but also banned from driving for three years.
