Conservative Councillor for Bradford, Simon Cooke, responded to questions about Theresa May’s apparent U-turn on going forward with an early election.
He said: “[The Prime Minister] has taken the opportunity to say I’m going for a mandate to put through the kind of Brexit we think people want.”
With local government elections also coming up, Mr Cooke was asked whether the public will fully engage with two elections in the space of just over a month: “It’s important that we’re seen to involve the public… So that the electorate and the decisions we’ve made can be seen to have some grounding in democracy. But I would be the first to say ‘can we have a break after this one.’”
