Artwork created by students from Bradford College and inspired by Bradford’s Marie Curie Hospice will be exhibited at the South Square Centre in Thornton.
Art and Design students at the college were tasked with producing work to adorn the walls of a new outpatient unit being built at the hospice in Maudsley Street.
Some of the pieces will be selected for installation in the redeveloped £1.25million state of the art Outpatient Unit at the hospice, set to open this summer. The development will provide a larger space, new facilities and a brighter, more welcoming environment and the improvements will enable the hospice to double the number of people it can support and enhance the range of services provided, including an extended lounge and conservatory area, a rehabilitation kitchen, a bigger gym, and remodelled consultation rooms for medical treatments.
Before being installed at the hospice, the student work will be exhibited in the Unit 9 Gallery at South Square Centre throughout the month of March.
Nikki Sheen, course leader for Art and Design Extended Diploma Level 3 at Bradford College, said: “The students were asked to put together a piece of work inspired by the hospice but not a literal interpretation of it.
“They were told to put themselves in the shoes of someone walking around the hospice and ask themselves what they would want from an artwork, maybe something that would evoke memories, promote a discussion or act as a distraction.
“I am incredibly proud of the diverse work the students have produced. They have really put their hearts into the project.”
Liz Howlett, fundraising manager at Marie Curie Hospice Bradford, has been impressed by the variety and quality of the students’ work.
“It is fascinating to see the very different ways the students have responded to the brief and how they have interpreted the hospice and its work and people. Whilst planning for the redevelopment we realised we would have an increased number of blank walls and thought it would be wonderful to fill them with art from local students. It will be great to have interesting, inspiring and thought-provoking pieces of art around to grab people’s attention and working with the college has been such a success that we hope to make it an ongoing project.”
