A Birmingham man has been jailed for 12 months for causing the death of a pregnant mother in Small Heath.
Shammas Rehman, from Charles Road, Small Heath, was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court for causing death by careless driving after he mounted the kerb in Heybarnes Lane on 6 September 2013.
His BMW 3 Series struck a heavily pregnant woman and two small children. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A four-year-old suffered serious injuries and a one-year-old sustained minor injuries.
After reducing Rehman’s sentence from 18 months to 12 for an early guilty plea, the judge commented: "It’s beyond belief how families cope with such tragedies." The 23-year-old will also be disqualified from driving for two and a half years.
Collision investigator Sergeant Paul Hughes said: "No sentence can undo such a tragedy − there are no winners here. A family has lost a wife and mother, along with the child she was carrying.
"Our thoughts remain with them as they continue to bear their loss."
