A drug dealer who was found with more than a quarter-of-a-million pounds worth of heroin on the back seat of his car has been jailed for five years four months.
Officers from the Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) stopped Kamal Choudhury for speeding up the M6 in his Volkswagon Passat on 22 February.
They pulled the 23-year-old over near Spaghetti Junction and, following routine checks, seized his car for not having the correct insurance.
As the traffic officers helped Choudhury and his female passenger unload the car before it was towed away, their suspicions were raised by the weight of one of their bags.
They looked inside and saw two plastic blocks covered in duct tape which they described as being significantly heavier than a bag full of books.
The pair were arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply and a subsequent search uncovered heroin with a street value of £266,700.
Choudhary admitted the charge at court, following an investigation by West Midlands Police’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit (SOCU).
But he claimed he was merely a courier, only delivering the drugs to the Birmingham but not involved in further distribution.
His passenger faced no further action.
Choudhury, from Prestbury Road in Aston, was sentenced on Wednesday (30 March) at Birmingham Crown Court.
Detective Inspector Darren Crutchley from SOCU said: “Whether he was involved in the distribution or not, this is a man who was responsible for bringing heroin and the crime and misery associated with Class A drugs to the streets of Birmingham.
“He’s now in prison for a long time and thanks to some great proactive police work, we’ve been able to remove a large amount of illegal substances from the streets of the West Midlands."
