
A Sunderland man convicted of terrorism offences has had his jail term increased after an appeal at the Royal Courts of Justice.
The sentence of Mohammed Abdul Kahar has been increased to eight years from the original 5 years handed down at Newcastle Crown Court.
Kahar was convicted after a jury found him guilty of the following offences:
1 offence – Section 5 of the Terrorism Act – Preparation of Terrorist Acts
1 offence – Section 17 of the Terrorism Act – Terrorist Financing
3 offences – Section 12 of the Terrorism Act – Support of Proscribed Organisation
5 offences – Section 2 of the Terrorism Act – Dissemination of Terrorist Publications
The jury found Kahar not guilty of one offence under Section 58 of the Terrorism Act – Possession of a Record.
Detective Chief Superintendent Clive Wain, Head of the North East CTU said “We welcome this increase in sentence which underlines the seriousness of the offences KAHAR was convicted of, specifically in relation to the evidence which showed Kahar took active steps to in preparation of travel to Syria to fight for a proscribed organisation; Daesh.”
