
Police are continuing their murder enquiry today after a father and daughter lost their lives in a fatal house fire in Wakefield on Wednesday.
The Homicide and Major Enquiry Team are appealing for witnesses and information after a fire was deliberately started on Ash Crescent in Stanley near Wakefield in the early hours of Wednesday October 19.
The fire claimed the lives of Andrew Broadhead (42) who died while trying to rescue his eight-year-old daughter Kiera from the fire. Following investigation detectives believe the fire was started deliberately and it is possible the person who set it was themselves burned in the fire.
They are anxious to speak with anyone who may have seen someone with burn injuries in the Wakefield area.
The incident happened at 55 Ash Crescent on Wednesday 19 October after fire fighters were called to the address at around 4.20am.
A 35-year-old woman and 13-year-old girl were able to escape the premises via a bedroom window.
It is believed Mr Broadhead, who had also got out, went back into the property to try and save Kiera who was trapped inside.
The 35-year-old woman and 13-year-old girl were treated for none life threatening injuries in hospital and discharged. They continue to be now be cared for by relatives.
DCI Nicola Bryar of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “This is a terrible incident which has robbed a family of a husband and their youngest daughter. Following enquiries, we are now treating it as a murder enquiry.
“We know that this fire took hold extremely quickly and it is possible that the person who set this fire was themselves burned in doing so.
“Have you seen anyone with burns or burn injuries in circumstances which you found suspicious?
If so, then please contact us as a matter of urgency.”
