Nearly two thirds of children awaiting adoption in Yorkshire & Humber in sibling groups

New research has found that nearly two thirds of children up for adoption in the Yorkshire and Humber region are in sibling groups.

Information published by First4Adoption, to coincide with National Adoption Week, show that 61 per cent of those waiting for adoptive families are brothers and sisters in groups of 2 or more.

The study also claims that just under half of these children in the region are from black or ethnic minority groups, at 45 per cent.

Gemma Gordon-Johnson, Head of Service for First4Adoption says, “The majority of people adopting for the first time choose to take a single child into their family. Also, it is often in the best interests of the children that a sibling group finds a family together rather than experience further trauma by being separated. This presents an extra challenge for social workers and these factors account for the high proportion of siblings across England waiting for an adoptive family”.
