New bridge and new routes now open as project progresses

The new link road on the A629 south of Halifax is now open, as part of work to improve the flow of traffic and make it easier to walk, cycle or take public transport.

The new bridge spanning the Calder and Hebble navigation, opened on Sunday 28 April, as part of phase 1b of the A629 improvement programme.

The project is completely transforming the road layout around the Salterhebble area. The new link road bridge connects the A6026 Wakefield Road and the A629, with the newly opened roundabout helping drivers to navigate the junction with Stainland Road.

Now the bridge is open, certain routes around the area are accessed in a completely different way. The details of the new routes are available at www.calderdalenextchapter.co.uk/projects/a629-calder-and-hebble-junction/new-routes

Work is continuing on remaining elements of the project, including new crossings, safer routes for walking and cycling in the area and new ways to access the canal. This means that there will still be some traffic management in place until the project is fully complete later this year.

Calderdale Council’s Director for Regeneration and Strategy, Shelagh O’Neill, said:

“The opening of the new road bridge is a key milestone in this major project to transform travel around south Halifax.

“Now the bridge is open, there are changes in travel routes around the area. These are signposted and there’s also additional temporary digital signage to raise further awareness. Full details of the new routes are available online at www.calderdalenextchapter.co.uk.

“We’re now in the final stages of the full project. We’d like to thank people for their patience throughout the construction period and whilst the remaining works are carried out and we look forward to its completion in summer this year.”

The A629 Phase 1b scheme has received funding through the Combined Authority’s West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund.
