Officers investigating a gun being shot in the air in Gorton are treating the incident as a hate crime and believe it to be linked to an incident the previous week.
Over the past week, Greater Manchester Police have twice been called to the Gorton area to reports that four men were on scooters brandishing hammers.
On Wednesday (1 August) night it was reported to police that, as a woman in her 20s went to her car on Heathcoate Road, one of the men shouted racial slurs at her before discharging what is believed to be a handgun in the air, whilst riding away.
No-one was hurt and no damage was caused.
Due to the similarity of an incident last week (27 July) on the same road, officers are treating the two as linked, although this is the first time it has been reported the men had a gun.
Detective Inspector Mark Davies of GMP’s City of Manchester Division, said: “Having both these incidents happen within one week is clearly concerning, not only for us but for local people, which is why we are releasing descriptions of those we want to speak to and carrying out our extensive enquiries at the scene.
“Hate crime, in whatever form, is not acceptable at all and although no-one was hurt, had that gun been fired at the woman or someone else on that road, this could have been a very different story.
“We’ve had reports that these people have been hanging around the area on their scooters before and after these incidents so someone in this area will know who they are or have information that will help us find them – it’s essential that you call us so they can be held to account for their actions.”
