Cllr Imran Khan, Bradford Council’s executive member for education, employment and skills, said: “It is good to see that the government has seen sense and decided to trust schools and award young people their teacher-assessed grades this year.
“It was evident after last week’s A Level results that the algorithm used unfairly impacted young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. It was unjust to take into account a school’s previous results. Every student deserves a fair grade that reflects their own abilities and their teachers and schools are best placed to make that judgement.
“We know the algorithm downgraded many A level students in Bradford and I am pleased for them that the government has listened to the outcry. However, some of those students will have missed out on places at their chosen university as a result of this fiasco and I call on government to find those places as a matter of urgency. No young person should be disadvantaged by this entirely avoidable mess.
“Our young people should never have been put in this position. The government should have managed it much better. They could have saved A level students the distress and uncertainty if they had learned from what happened in Scotland a fortnight ago.
“It is a relief that this debacle has been resolved ahead of Thursday, when thousands of young people across Bradford District will get their GCSE results. Those grades will now be based on their potential and not on a flawed computer programme. I wish them all the very best of luck as they prepare to move on to further education, training or employment.”
