Smokers are being urged to kick the habit during Stoptober and help raise vital funds for local cancer research and community health projects.
To provide extra motivation for those taking part, Yorkshire Cancer Research has created a Stoptober fundraising campaign where quitters can ask for donations from family and friends.
Yorkshire Cancer Research says the money will fund projects to help more people in Yorkshire avoid, survive and cope with cancer, including the UK’s largest lung screening trial due to start in Leeds in November.
The charity says Yorkshire has the highest smoking rate in England, with an estimated 710,000 smokers living in the region. People who give up smoking for 28 days during Stoptober are five times more likely to quit completely and for good compared to people who have given up for less time.
Leah Holtam, Cancer Insight Manager at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “Stoptober is a brilliant campaign with lots of tools to support those looking to quit, including an app that helps track your progress. Being sponsored to quit is a great way to stay motivated when you’re struggling, and it means you’re helping a great cause at the same time.
“Smoking is responsible for 16 different types of cancer, and can increase your risk of other health conditions too, including coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke. But it’s never too late to stop. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health, and it’s important to remember that you’re far more likely to quit successfully with support. Quitting can also help you protect your family and save you thousands of pounds.”
