A huge haul of guns and knives have been handed into West Yorkshire Police as part of its latest weapons surrender.
Nearly 300 knives, guns and ammunition were handed in at the county’s police stations during the campaign launched earlier this month. Among items handed in were 110 guns, 158 knives and other bladed weapons and 29 lots of ammunition, equating to around 300 rounds.
Bradford has had the highest number of weapons surrendered in comparison to the other participating cities & boroughs such as Leeds, Calderdale, Wakefield and Kirklees.
West Yorkshire Police Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Angela Williams said: "We are delighted with the response. Two weeks ago these items were in circulation and had the potential to fall into the wrong hands and harm our communities – now they are in our possession and will never be used for criminality.”
This year’s campaign was supported by Leeds father-of-three Christopher Wright. He was left fighting for his life after being gunned down on the doorstep of his Leeds home in April 2010.
The weapons surrender, is West Yorkshire Police’s third in recent years. Its aim is to avoid weapons getting into the wrong hands and provide members of the community with a safe place to dispose of firearms, ammunition, knives and other weapons they have.
West Yorkshire Police is keen to hear from anyone who may have information about the illegal possession of firearms including ammunition and are seeking help to identify so-called ‘safe’ houses where they may be held.
