Sport pitches at Marley Activities and Coaching Centre are set to be transformed as the first phase of improvements are due to start today (Monday, 17 August).
The work on the redevelopment of the centre will see the 3G pitch being lengthened and replaced with a new FIFA accredited artificial surface to allow league matches to be played and the ground being upgraded.
The upgrade includes changes to fencing and access to meet Football Association requirements. This will allow Steeton AFC to use the facility as their home ground and will enable fans to attend matches in the future. The project also includes a full replacement of the indoor sports carpeted surface.
This phase of work is set to begin on 17 August 2020 and will take eight weeks to complete at a cost of £280,000. The funding for this project has been secured by Bradford Council. The Football Facilities Improvement Fund will contribute to the upgrades to allow fans to access and watch Steeton AFC play, as the next phase of works.
The project supports Bradford Council’s 2019 Playing Pitch Strategy (PPS) and Sports Playing Pitch Improvement Programme (SPIP) whose overall objective is to deliver a hierarchy of outdoor playing pitch and ancillary facilities that meets current and future demand and seeks to address declining playing numbers within the key sports of football, cricket, rugby (both League and Football Union), tennis and athletics.
Coun Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, said:
"It is great that the planned works at the Marley site are about to start. Our local residents deserve to see Improvements being made to our sports pitches in Bradford district and this facility will encourage those who want to participate in team sports such as football and rugby, for many years to come.
“A key priority for us is for people to keep fit and active. Providing better sports facilities for residents, schools and local sports clubs within their local area is one way we can ensure this.”
“Steeton AFC playing home games at Marley will be a great new addition to the centre that I hope existing and new supporters will enjoy.”
“The Marley facility is also used by grass roots football teams of all ages meaning it will also benefit the next generation of footballers from across the district.”
