Young people from the Wyke area of the Bradford District have been recognised for volunteering their time to help refurbish their local community centre with inspirational designs.
The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Coun Geoff Reid, and the Lady Mayoress, presented young people with Lord Mayor’s Awards certificates at a celebratory event on 4 August which was attended by local councillors and all the partnership organisations involved in the project.
The initiative involved 25 young people volunteering their time over a nine month period from September 2015 to June 2016 to make improvements to facilities for local people at the Delph Hill community sports hall. The work involved planning, designing and implementing designs and changes to make the sports hall more appealing and accessible for all.
A number of partners were involved in supporting the delivery of the project. Brian Pearson from Woodlands Cricket club successfully secured funding through the National Lottery and then worked in partnership with Kamrun Haq from Bradford Council’s Youth Service to support young people to volunteer on the project. Royds Community Association agreed for the project to take place in sports hall.
Councillor Abdul Jabar, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety, said:
“This is a fantastic partnership initiative and I want to thank the partners and all young people who have volunteered their time and shown commitment and dedication in helping improve the sports hall. It shows what a great contribution young people can make to their community and supports the Council’s People Can initiative”
