10-year-old rape Indian rape victim gives birth

A 10-year-old rape victim, who was denied permission for an abortion by India’s Supreme Court, has given birth.

Reports say the girl is unaware she has given birth, as she was told whilst pregnant that her bulge was the result of a big stone in her stomach.

The baby, which weighed 2.5kg, was delivered by Caesarean section in the city of Chandigarh yesterday morning, 17 August.

It is believed both the mother and child are fine.

The girl has alleged she was raped by her uncle, who has been arrested.

The baby has been taken into intensive care due to the premature birth and is expected to be put up for adoption.

The court did not permit an abortion as they ruled the pregnancy was in too late a stage by the time it was reported.
