13-year-old rape victim seeks abortion ruling in Indian court

A pregnant teenage girl has gone to India’s Supreme Court to seek approval for an abortion.

The 13-year-old, from Mumbai, is 30 weeks pregnant and has accused a colleague of her father with rape. The man has been arrested.

Current Indian law allows for abortions for women pregnant for up to 20 weeks.

It was only discovered that the girl was pregnant when her parents took her to a doctor to assess her for what they believed was obesity.

This case comes just days after a 10-year-old girl, also a rape victim, gave birth after having her family’s plea for an abortion rejected by the court.
