16 Maoist rebels have been killed by police in India.
Officials say the 16 militants were killed in the central state of Chhattisgarh, near Bijapur district.
The rebels killed 24 troops within the past month, in a long running-insurgency mounted by the Maoists.
The group say they are fighting for communist rule and greater rights for tribal people and the rural poor.
Some sources said the rebels had been killed in two different operations.
In 2010 they killed 74 policemen in Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh in one of their most lethal attacks.
