Four men held over a high-profile rape and murder case in India have been shot dead by police in an alleged attempted escape.
A senior police official explained that two officers were also injured in the encounter.
The four men were arrested following the brutal gang rape and murder of a 27-year-old vet in the region on 27 November.
The incident occurred when the police took the four men to the flyover where the woman was found last week after being raped, set on fire and murdered.
Police had requested that the men attend the scene of the crime on Friday morning to give a detailed account of events from the night of the woman’s death.
Police claimed the four arrestees tried to escape during investigations, snatching weapons from attending officers and attacking them.
In response, officers returned fire, killing all four of the accused rapists.
