Arrests made in India after women abused for being ‘witches’

Police in India have made arrests after it has been alleged women were abused in a village, accused of being witches.

A 65-year-old woman and her 35-year-old daughter claim they were stripped naked, made to walk through the streets, and forced to eat human excrement after villagers said they spread illness through the community.

11 people in northern Jharkhand state were taken into custody in relation to the incident.

Police have said extra security has been provided for the women and an awareness campaign has been started in the area.
