India is searching for blame whilst reeling from a horrific train crash that saw 58 people die at a festival.
A train ploughed through a crowd who had gathered to watch fireworks celebrations as part of the festival of Dussehra in Punjab’s Amritsar.
The Hindustan Times reports that the driver said in his police statement he did not stop the train because the vehicle was being pelted by stones – a claim highly criticised by witnesses who say the train did not slow down but sped through the crowd.
Although the police have registered a complaint they have done so against "unnamed persons" as it is still unclear who is responsible for the incident.
The BBC says they were told by officials from the fire department, the railways and the health and safety department that organisers did not seek their permission for the event.
