The execution of four infamous Delhi gang rapists has been delayed for a third time after one of the convicts lodged a mercy plea to be considered by the president.
Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh Singh were sentenced to death in 2013 following the brutal gang-rape and murder of a young woman as she made her way home from seeing a movie in December 2012.
The execution of the four men was originally set to take place on January 22, however the date has since been pushed back twice, to February 1 and again to March 3.
Following the new mercy plea submitted by Pawan Gupta, which will result in a minimum of a 14-day postponement to the executions, all four of the convicts have exhausted all options legally available to them.
Subsequently the execution is now expected to take place in the second half of March, although a new execution date is yet to be issued.
