An Indian man has been arrested for divorcing his wife by postcard just three weeks after they were married in Hyderabad.
Mohammed Hanif, 38, was detained by officers for harassment and cheating after he sent his second wife the postcard on which he wrote the word “talaq”, meaning divorce, three times.
The practice of triple talaq, which allows Muslim men to divorce their wives in an instant, is facing increasing opposition by women’s rights groups in India.
Mr Haneef was released on bail but police have said that they will arrest him again on charges of rape because the marriage procedure may have not been carried out correctly due to the use of improper papers.
