India's Supreme Court has begun a review into the controversial practice of instant divorce in Islam.
The court opened hearings into the practice known as “triple talaq”.
The court said it would examine whether it is fundamental to the religion.
In India a Muslim man can divorce his wife simply by repeating the word talaq – meaning divorce – three times.
There are many Muslim groups opposing the court's intervention but the move has the backing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A multi-faith bench made up of five judges have been employed to hear the sensitive issue. - a Hindu, a Sikh, a Christian, a Zoroastrian and one Muslim.
