The custom which allows Muslim men to instantly divorce their wives has been banned by an Indian court.
The practice, known as triple talaq, in which a marriage can be ended when a man repeats the word ‘talaq’ three times, was classed as "un-Islamic, arbitrary and unconstitutional" by India’s Supreme Court.
The custom was brought to the court’s attention when cases were filed by five Muslim women who had been divorced in this way and by two rights groups.
The decision was celebrated by women’s rights campaigners across the country.
