Clashes erupted in India and a statue of former Soviet leader Lenin was pulled down following elections.
Supporters of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are accused of bringing the statue down after the party dislodged the Communist Party of India (Marxist) after 25 years in power, in the state of Tripura.
This incident is reported to have come after clashes between activists from both parties.
The outgoing party claims more than 240 people had been injured in attacks on its party and trade union offices, since the election results were announced over the weekend.
The driver of the excavator, which brought down the statue, was arrested and later released on bail.
