The conviction against a high-level politician in connection with the 2002 Gujarat religious riots has been overturned.
Maya Kodnani, who was a senior BJP party member and former state minister, was handed a 28-year jail term over the murder of 97 people.
Reports say the court has acquitted the sentence on appeal on benefit of doubt, as there were no police witnesses who confirmed the charge that she had provoked a Hindu mob.
The riots, which began after a train fire blamed on Muslims killed 60 Hindu pilgrims, left more than 1,000 people dead.
