Nipah virus deaths recorded in India

    Deaths attributed to the Nipah virus have been recorded in India.

    Nipah is an infection which can be transmitted to humans from animals, with fruit bats thought to be the natural host of the virus.

    Nine people have died in confirmed or suspected cases in the south Indian state of Kerala.

    Nipah virus is "top of the list" of 10 priority diseases that the World Health Organisation has identified as potentials for the next major outbreak.
