Outrage has spread across India over the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl.
The body of Asifa Bano was found in a forest on 17 January near Kathua city in the Kashmir region.
The girl belonged to a nomadic Muslim tribe and a Hindu man was arrested in connection with the incident.
This sparked protests by far-right Hindu groups, with two ministers from the ruling nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reportedly attending a rally in support of the accused.
Anger quickly spread through the nation. Many of those voicing their opinion believe that such a gruesome crime should not have become a religious flashpoint.
Police have now arrested eight men, including a retired government official, four police officers and a juvenile in connection with Asifa's death.
