Police in Pakistan said they suspect a “serial killer” to be behind the case involving the rape and murder of a child which has sparked protests across the country.
The body of seven-year-old Zainab was found in a rubbish dump on Tuesday 9 January in the city of Kasur in Pakistan’s Punjab province.
Two people were killed in protests over the killing when police fired into a crowd allegedly attempting to storm police headquarters in Kasur.
Police now say an initial probe indicates that a “serial killer” was behind eight similar cases reported in the district since 2015. They added that five DNA samples taken from previous incidents all belonged to the same person who they now also believe responsible for Zainab’s murder.
A hunt is underway and a Rs. 10m reward has been offered for his capture.
