Priyanka Gandhi kicks off political career

Priyanka Gandhi made her first public appearance after beginning a political career amid a rapturous crowd of supporters in the north Indian city of Lucknow.

She arrived with her brother, main opposition Congress party president Rahul Gandhi. Priyanka formerly joined the political arena last month after being appointed the party general secretary for the eastern part of the crucial state of Uttar Pradesh.

The Congress party was routed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the last general election in 2014 and has found it hard to recover.
