Authorities in India have opened a rape investigation against a lawmaker from the country’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Kuldeep Singh Sengar, 50, a lawmaker from Uttar Pradesh state, is accused of raping a 16-year-old girl last year – an allegation he denies.
The girl attempted to kill herself in front of the chief minister’s home last week, in protest at police who she claims would not register her case. Her father died last week after clashes with Mr Sengar's supporters.
It is unclear when officers will take Mr Sengar into custody. Activists say he should have been arrested immediately.
