Police in Pakistan have arrested a suspected serial rapist who they believe to be responsible for the rape and murder of a child which sparked outrage across the country.
7-year-old Zainab was found dead on a rubbish heap on 9 January in Kasur. The news caused protests in various cities, with two men killed by officers as the police headquarters in Kasur was stormed.
DawnNews reported that on Tuesday 23 January a suspect was arrested after a DNA sample match but this is yet to be confirmed by the government in Punjab.
It is believed the man had been arrested earlier on in the case but was released pending further enquiries.
Police confirmed the DNA sample from Zainab indicated the involvement of one culprit who was suspected in at least seven similar cases that occurred in the district over the past year.
