Two Indian men have been arrested for allegedly killing two Dalit children who were defecating in the open.
Police revealed that 12-year-old Roshni and 10-year-old Avinash were beaten with sticks on Wednesday while defecating near a village road.
Their family explained that they couldn’t afford a toilet at home.
The two boys, who were of the lowest level of the Indian caste system – Dalits, also known as untouchables – were beaten by two upper-caste men.
Prime Minster Narendra Modi introduced a scheme in 2014 designed to wipe out open defacation by October this year.
However, as a result of a lack of water, poor maintenance and slow change in behaviour have hindered India’s goals of ending open defecation.
