Victim of notorious India sex gang name revealed

It is feared victims of sexual abuse in India will be more reticent to come forward after the name of a survivor of an alleged sex blackmail gang was revealed by government officials.

The woman's name was contained in an official document published by the Tamil Nadu government.

It is illegal in India to report the name of a sexual assault victim.

Police in the southern Indian town of Pollachi have been appealing for more people to come forward since reports first emerged of a group blackmailing victims following sexual abuse.

But it is claimed the revelation of the student's name - in an official document handing the case to federal investigators - could deter women speaking out.
