Woman beaten by Indian mob over child-abduction rumours

A woman with learning difficulties was beaten by a mob in India over child-abduction rumours spread on social media.

Reports say locals in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal claim the woman had been spotted in the area luring children with sweets. It is believed she was then assaulted.

The woman was taken to hospital for bruising and was released after initial treatment.

A number of victims have been lynched by groups in India over the past couple of months due to rumours of children being taken away by strangers.

Authorities are still trying to quell the rumours in a bid to stop the attacks.
