Woman wins 17-year battle against Punjab University

38 year old Wajiha Arooj has won a 17-year legal battle against Punjab University.

On Tuesday the Lahore High Court in Pakistan ruled in Wajiha’s favour, who had sued the University for damaging her reputation.

While studying for her master's degree at the university, Arooj was wrongly marked absent for an exam and told that she had failed. Following the error, gossip and speculation emerged within the university campus that Arooj had been spending her time with different men using her classes as an excuse..

Arooj said “At one point I was so distressed I even considered committing suicide. Following the incident, my family, fearing for my reputation arranged for me to get me married and I moved to Canada with my husband. My dreams of finishing my education and starting a career never came true.”

The court's ruling in Arooj's favour was challenged, but upheld by an appeals court.
