After the England under-20s clinched the World Cup for their age group the senior men’s team failed to overcome France in a friendly.
The Three Lions were beat by their continental neighbours 3-2 in the Stade de France.
England were out-classed by Les Bleus, who managed to win despite spending most of the match fielding only 10 men after Raphael Varane was sent off for a challenge in the box.
Harry Kane converted the resulting spot-kick, his second of the game after he found the opener within 10 minutes.
The decision to show a red card involved a first for the England team – the use of video technology to arrive at a decision.
Two officials reviewed footage of the challenge and communicated their decision to the referee, who suspended Varane from the pitch and awarded a penalty.
Unlike other sports, such as rugby, the discussion between officials was not broadcast for all to hear.
However, the penalty came as little help. France put in a mature and rounded display, when compared to the visitors, winning the game with goals from Umtiti, Sidibe and Dembélé.
