Everton have put a firm bud in to progress to the group stages of the Europa League after going ahead 2-0 in their first leg at home against Hadjuk Split.
The match was marred by the away fans, who attempted to break onto the pitch at Goodison. Items were thrown as the two teams were led to the other side of the stadium for safety. The visiting team appealed for calm from their supporters, who were eventually brought under control by police and stewards for the match to continue.
Minutes prior, Michael Keane opened up the scoring for the Toffees with a well-timed header from a peach of a cross delivered by Baines. It is Keane’s first goal since signing for his new team this summer.
Just before half-time Idrissa Gueye netted his first of the season, after linking up well with an incisive pass from Rooney.
Everton will travel to Croatia for the second leg next Thursday, 24 August.
