Liverpool beat Manchester City in the second-leg of their Champions League tie to proceed to the semi-finals.
Pep Guardiola had eyebrows raised when news of his team selection was spread. The Spaniard’s starting 11 was an extremely positive choice, brimming with attack-minded players – in response to their 3-0 deficit from the first leg.
His bold decision looked like it was going to pay off when Gabriel Jesus put City ahead inside two minutes at the Etihad Stadium.
However, the necessary attacking impetus may have been Guardiola’s own downfall. Liverpool only need one goal to make City require five goals, owing to the away goals rule. With insatiable attacking prowess this season, this moment was always going to come and it arrived when Mo Salah chipped the ball over Ederson in the 56th minute.
Firminio later converted in the 77th minute to give the visitors a 2-1 victory on the night, winning 5-1 on aggregate.
Elsewhere, Roma knocked out Barcelona by beating the Spanish club 3-0 in Italy, going through on one away goal in a 4-4 aggregate win.
The draw for the semi-finals will take place on Friday at noon.
