Mark Cavendish has been pulled out of the Abu Dhabi Tour following a crash on the opening stage of the race.
The 32-year-old Manxman suffered a concussion and sustained whiplash in the collision. His team said the incident occurred when “the race director's car slowed suddenly as it led the peloton out of Madinat Zayed”.
Cavendish went on to start the race but pulled out after just 5km. Team Dimension Data’s doctor, Adrian Rotunno, said: “Due to the concussion, we were not willing to risk rider safety and the call was made for Mark to stop the race.”
