Player sent off for answering with his own name

A former Arsenal player was sent off the pitch for dissent after simply telling the referee his name.

Sanchez Watt, who was playing for Hemel Hempstead Town, was about to be booked by referee Dean Hulme in a National League South game against East Thurrock United.

When the official asked for the player’s name the 27-year-old repeatedly replied with “Watt”.

Believing the player to be asking “what?” over and over, Hulme sent the player for an early bath with a red card.

The card was rescinded when the misunderstanding came to light.
