A full roundup of game week 12 of the Premier League, including the team of the week.
Norwich 0-2 Watford
With both sides’ early season form pointing to relegation at the end of the campaign, it was a must-win match for both sides who have struggled to get points on the board in recent weeks. In the end it was Watford who ran out winners, chalking up their first win of the season, thanks to an early goal from Gerard Deulofeu, before Andre Gray doubled the Hornets’ lead in the second half.
Chelsea 2-0 Crystal Palace
Chelsea’s impressive run of form continued over the weekend, with their youthful setup continuing to impress. Tammy Abraham struck first for the blues, before Christian Pulisic netted his fifth goal in three games to secure the win for Frank Lampard’s men.
Burnley 3-0 West Ham United
A home with for Burnley saw them surge into the top half of the table, thanks to a commanding win over a West Ham side that just can’t seem to fulfil their potential. Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood gave the hosts a two-goal advantage going into the break, before a bizarre goalkeeping error from the Hammers’ backup stopper Roberto Jimenez sealed the victory for Sean Dyche’s side.
Newcastle United 2-1 Bournemouth
It was a hard-fought affair at St James’ Park, but in the end, Newcastle were able to fight back against Bournemouth and secure all three points. Liverpool loanee Harry Wilson opened the scoring after a well worked corner routine saw him latch onto the ball and strike from 12 yards. Newcastle fought back well though, with a flying header from DeAndre Yedlin levelling the scoring just before the break. Ciaran Clark gave the Magpies the lead shortly after half time and they were able to hold on from there, despite Josh King squandering a golden opportunity to help Bournemouth salvage a point.
Southampton 1-2 Everton
In a match Everton seemingly dominated, it was, in the end, a close match against relegation candidates, Southampton. Tom Davies struck early to give the Toffees a commanding lead however, shortly after the break Danny Ings found himself in the right place at the right time to grab a tap-in and level the scores. Sadly for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men they wouldn’t be taking anything away from the match as Everton were finally able to make their dominance count as Richarlison got on the end of a cross from Djibril Sidibe to ensure all three point would be heading back to Goodison Park.
Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Sheffield United
Another week, another controversy surrounding VAR. This time it was the league’s surprise package, Sheffield United that were on the receiving end of a controversial refereeing decision courtesy of the new technology. Heung-min Son netted first to give the hosts a lead, shortly before the Blades seemingly equalised through David McGoldrick, although it was ruled out as John Lundstram was deemed to be marginally offside in the build up to the goal. The Blades did get their goal in the end through George Baldock, seeing the match end in a stalemate.
Leicester City 2-0 Arsenal
Another commanding display from Leicester saw them move up to second in the table, thanks to second half goals from Jamie Vardy and James Maddison. Meanwhile, Arsenal continue to struggle to find form, with the Gunners having only won 33% of their matches so far this season.
Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 Aston Villa
The West Midlands derby was a close-run affair between the two sides, with the matches’ outcome being decided by how clinical Wolves were in front of goal. Ruben Neves and Raul Jimenez netted for the hosts, as they battled against their local rivals for the first time in the Premier League since January 2012. Trezeguet pulled a goal back in the dying minutes, but I wasn’t enough to earn a result for the Villains.
Manchester United 3-1 Brighton and Hove Albion
United were seemingly playing to their potential against Brighton, as they dominated the match, as reflected in the scoreline. A quickfire double from Andreas Pereira and an own goal from Davy Propper - whose attempted clearance from Scott McTominay’s effort ended up in his own net – gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side a comfortable lead. The hoists were made to sweat for a period in the second half as Lewis Dunk pulled one back for the Seagulls, although Marcus Rashford quickly restored the Red Devils’ two-goal lead, with the hosts able to see out the rest of the match from there.
Liverpool 3-1 Manchester City
In arguably the most important match of the season so far – the clash between the Champions of England and the Champions of Europe – Liverpool came out on top, earning themselves a commanding lead at the top of the table. Liverpool’s opening goal was mired in controversy as a handball in the Liverpool area was overlooked, before Fabinho hammered a beautiful 25-yard shot home. Mohamed Salah doubled the lead soon after and Sadio Mane continued his fine run of goalscoring form to make it 3-0 in the second half. City were able to pull one back through Bernardo Silva, although they weren’t able to salvage a result, with Liverpool subsequently going eight points clear at the top of the table and City dropping down to fourth.
