A quartet from Whitby Golf Club in Yorkshire pulled off a winning double when they successfully defended the English Club Team Championship.
Bob Scott, Siew Choon Tan, Janet McGeehin and Mike Coates scored 86 points in the final on the Bracken course at Woodhall Spa, the home of England Golf.
They finished three points ahead of the team from Enmore Park, Somerset, while third place went to Windlesham, Surrey, with 82 points.
“We all wanted to defend the title and I think our club will be delighted that we have achieved it,” said Janet. “We are all very pleased with the success.”
They had almost completed their round when play was suspended because of lightning.
“Three of us had teed off on the 18th when we had to stop. We waited an hour to finish the game sitting around and wondering if we’d be able to finish the game and if we’d be able to hit the ball properly when we went back out.
“We eventually scored five points on the hole – and we did need those points to win,” added Janet.
Will they defend again and try for their hat trick next year? “It would be nice but we haven’t had a chance to discuss it and I think we’ll have to consult on that!” said Janet.
In the year since they first won the championship both Bob and Siew Choon have reduced their handicaps. The final was played as part of England Golf Week, a five-day festival which celebrates the handicap game.
