Newsroom Special - 1 in 4 UK children going hungry during summer holidays

8 minutes | Thursday, 30 August 2018

FareShare, the UK’s largest food redistribution charity, says that one in four UK children go hungry during the summer holidays.

The charity’s ActiveAte campaign works with charities to provide nutritious and free meals for children who need them most, ensuring that they are well fed and able to concentrate when they return to school in September.

FareShare Yorkshire saves over 663 tonnes of good surplus food from right across the food supply chain and redistribute it to 186 charities and community groups throughout the region. These charities provide meals as part of their services to people in need – such as children’s breakfast clubs, day clubs for older people, domestic violence refuges, homeless shelters and drug and alcohol rehab units. In 2017/18 the branch provided enough food for nearly 1.6 million meals (worth over £1.2 million to the charity sector in savings), which helped to feed nearly 16,000 people every week.

Joining us in the studio to tell us more is Lindsay Boswell, Chief Executive at FareShare.
