Newsroom Special - Britain’s sweet tooth spikes a cause for concern

7 minutes | Wednesday, 11 April 2018

Sugar has been a hot topic for debate over recent months and new research, commissioned before the introduction of the 'Sugar Tax', revealed that alarmingly over half of the UK are unaware of their daily recommended allowance. This lack of knowledge regarding sugar consumption raises concerns for the nation’s health.

One main worry the study highlights, is how we’ve already reached our total daily sugar allowance before 11am. This may be a result of the high sugar content found in our much loved breakfast foods. Two fifths of Brits consume a bowl of cereal in the morning, and cereal has been targeted for its sugary ingredients with some industry leading cereals having up to 11g of sugar per bowl. Additionally almost have a fifth of those questioned have coffee with added sugar by mid-morning only further adding to their daily quota.

In the studio to discuss the results of the study is CEO of Vita Coco EMEA Giles Brook who is encouraging the nation to swap high sugar items for healthier alternatives and award winning nutritionist, Anita Bean.
